Shingle Calculator: Estimate Bundles, Squares & Cost
Use this free shingle calculator to find out how many shingle bundles and squares you need for your roof, plus an estimated material cost. Enter your roof dimensions, pitch, and shingle type to get an instant breakdown.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter your roof's length and width (the footprint dimensions of your home). Select how many roof planes or sides your roof has - most homes have a simple gable roof with 2 sides, while hip roofs have 4. Choose your roof pitch using the rise-per-12-inches format - if you don't know your pitch, use our Roof Pitch Calculator first. Select a shingle type or enter your own price per square, then choose a waste factor based on your roof's complexity. Click Calculate to see squares, bundles, and estimated cost.
How Shingle Quantity Is Calculated
Shingles are sold in squares (100 sq ft of coverage) and bundles (typically 3 bundles per square). The calculator starts with your roof's footprint area, then applies a pitch multiplier - because a sloped roof has more surface area than the flat footprint below it. A steeper pitch means more actual roof area to cover, even if the footprint stays the same.
For example, a 40×30 ft footprint with a 6/12 pitch has a multiplier of about 1.06, giving a roof area of roughly 1,272 sq ft instead of the flat 1,200 sq ft. After adding a 15% waste factor for cuts and overlaps at hips, valleys, and edges, the area becomes about 1,463 sq ft, or 14.6 squares - rounded up to 14.6, requiring 44 bundles.

What Is the Average Cost of Shingles?
3-tab asphalt shingles, the most basic and budget-friendly option, typically cost $90-110 per square for materials alone. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are the most common choice for US homes today, offering better durability and a layered appearance, priced around $120-150 per square. Designer or luxury shingles, which mimic the look of slate or wood shake, can run $250-350 per square or more. For a typical 1,500 sq ft roof (about 15-17 squares with waste), material costs range from roughly $1,500 for 3-tab to $2,000-2,500 for architectural shingles.
